Bucket Fillers at Greene County Elementary for September are (from left) Austyn Funcke, Ellie Badger, Madison Mobley and Dimitri Brown. With them is Lori Subbert, Hy-Vee Drug Store manager.
The elementary school is a “Bucket Filling” school based on Carol McCloud’s book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? The premise of the book is that everyone carries an invisible bucket that holds the love and happiness they receive each day. We are happy when our bucket is full and sad when it is empty. Bucket Fillers are those who do just that, fill the buckets of others.
Students who are almost always filling buckets are nominated for the Bucket Filler of the Month award by adults in the school, explains elementary guidance counselor Teresa Skalla. A committee then selects one recipient from each grade level each month.
Hy-Vee Drug Store is the corporate sponsor and provides Bucket Filler T-shirts for the award winners each month.
